Musnad al-Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal (مسند الإمام أحمد بن حنبل) is one of the largest hadith collections in Islamic scholarship, compiled by Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal (164-241 AH / 780-855 CE), founder of the Hanbali school of jurisprudence and teacher of Imam al-Bukhari. This edition presents the complete Musnad, around 27,000 hadith (counting repeated chains), in a single compact volume.

How the Musnad Is Organized

Unlike Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, which arrange hadith by fiqh topic, the Musnad is organized by narrator: every hadith transmitted by a given Companion is grouped together under that Companion's name. It opens with the hadith of the Asharah Mubashsharah, the ten Companions promised Paradise, and continues through the Companions and, in its final sections, hadith narrated by women.

Is Every Hadith in the Musnad Authentic?

Unlike Bukhari and Muslim, who set authenticity (sihhah) as their explicit selection criterion, Imam Ahmad's stated aim was preservation of the hadith he had gathered, so the Musnad contains a mix of sahih, hasan, and da'if narrations rather than sahih material exclusively. It remains highly valued — modern scholars, notably Shu'ayb al-Arna'ut and his team, have produced detailed gradings of every hadith in it, and it preserves many authentic narrations not found in the Two Sahihs. A small number of narrations have been questioned by critics such as Ibn al-Jawzi, a point hadith scholars have long debated rather than a reason to set the collection aside.

Compilation and Transmission

Imam Ahmad is said to have selected the Musnad from a much larger body of hadith he had gathered over his lifetime. After his death, his son Abdullah ibn Ahmad transmitted the work and added further material from his father's other students, known as the Zawa'id Abdullah, and later additions were made by the transmitter Abu Bakr al-Qati'i — both well-documented parts of the Musnad's transmission history rather than later alterations to the original text.

About This Edition

This single-volume printing uses a large page format and compact typeface to fit the entire Musnad into one binding, a common approach for major reference works in Arabic-Islamic publishing. It's built for consulting specific narrations rather than continuous cover-to-cover reading.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this the same as Sahih al-Bukhari or Sahih Muslim?
No. It's a different, larger hadith collection organized by narrator rather than by topic, and unlike the Two Sahihs it isn't limited to authentic (sahih) hadith only.

Is every hadith in this book authentic?
No. The Musnad contains a mix of sahih, hasan, and da'if narrations, since Imam Ahmad's goal was preservation rather than strict authenticity filtering. Modern scholars have graded each hadith individually.

Is this the complete Musnad in one volume?
Yes, this edition presents the full text using a large-format, compact-typeface layout to fit it into a single binding.
